Education and Appointments:

Prof. Huai Chen have concentrated on studies of carbon cycling of peatlands, mainly at the Zoige Plateau in the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. With systematic evaluation of the peatland carbon stock there, we found the great potential for carbon sequestration of peatlands at the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, and elaborated the way the spatial-temporal dynamics of methane fluxes in the peatlands being influenced by major factors like water table and vegetation. Together with our partners we developed a new wetland methane emission process model that integrates hydro-process and plant function characteristics. We studied the responses of peatland soil carbon stock to climate change, and found the instability of the previously considered “stable carbon” in deep peat in the background of global climate change. About these researches we published 81 SCI articles, for 48 of which I am the first author or corresponding author, on top journals including Global Change Biology, Soil Biology & Biochemistry, and Quaternary Science Reviews. These papers have a WOS recorded citation of 1063 times, among them 2 Highly Cited in Field and 10 on Q1 journals of CAS. Besides, I am the chief editor of an English monograph. The abovementioned findings are cited by 2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories: Wetlands, and by the Towards Climate-responsible Peatlands Management (FAO, 2014).
